Los cantos de trabajo de llano constituyen el elemento más saliente de una cultura que se ha tejido alrededor de la ganadería extensiva desde hace aproximadamente 300 años en la cuenca del río Orinoco, tanto del lado venezolano como del lado colombiano.
La muestra aquí presentada comprende una parte del mundo material que está asociado a este gran entramado sociocultural y está compuesta por objetos y herramientas de trabajo, así como por espacios construidos en lugares donde floreció la ganadería, especialmente conocidos como hatos y fundos llaneros.

Llano work songs constitute the most outstanding element of a culture that has developed around extensive cattle breeding for approximately 300 years in the basin of the Orinoco River, both in the Venezuelan and the Colombian sides.
The following exhibition encompasses one part of the material world associated to this grand sociocultural interweaving; is made up of objects, work tools and spaces where cattle breeding flourished, especially known as the Llano estates.
Arcial
Herramienta usada para dominar los caballos. Consta de un mango de madera o hueso de 40 cm de largo, tiene un orificio en la punta por donde pasa un rejo de 40 cm de largo.
Con la gasa se retuerce el hocico del caballo y se logra dominar el animal para poder curarlo o suministrarle medicamentos contra enfermedades o insectos.
Arcial
Tool used to dominate horses. It is made up of a wooden or bone handle about 40cms long. It has a hole in the tip where a strap of uncured leather, 40cms long, is inserted.
With the leather knot, the worker can twist the horse’s muzzle and gets to dominate the animal to cure it or administer medication against diseases or insects.
Chiramo
También llamado “Chinato”; está elaborado de bejuco chaparro, flexible. Se usa en el hocico de los becerros cuando son persistentes y no aceptan el destete.
Se naricea el becerro y se le teje en forma de malla con el mismo bejuco. Dura poco tiempo pero impide que pueda mamar.
Chiramo
Also known as “Chinato”, is made up of the vine of the Chaparro plant, flexible. It is used in the steers’ muzzle when they are being stubborn and won’t accept being weaned.
The steer’s nose is pierced and the chiramo is woven as a net with the same vine. It doesn’t last long but it prevents the steer from feeding.
Suelta
Herramienta elaborada en rejo (piel de res). Tiene dos anillos en correa y un pedazo de rejo entre anillo y anillo llamado campo de suelta o canto de suelta, de un metro o media brazada de largo.
Se instala en las patas de un caballo cuando es cerrero o difícil de amarrar, para que no pueda correr.
Suelta
Tool made in leather. It has two knots and a piece of leather between them called campo de suelta or canto de suelta, approximately a meter long.
It is installed in the horse’s legs when they are untamed or being difficult to tie down so that it cannot run.
Patriota
Está elaborada en cuero. En un extremo lleva un solo anillo en correa que se amarra en la mano del caballo, en su canto lleva un serie de nudos abultados que entorpecen el desplazamiento del animal.
Permite que el caballo camine despacio y no pueda correr. Se dice que su nombre viene de la época de Simón Bolívar.
Patriot
Made in leather. In one end, it has a single belt which is tied to the horse’s hand; it has a series of bulky knots that make it difficult for the animal to move. It allows the horse to walk slowly but not run.
It is said that its name comes from the times of Simón Bolivar.
Soga
Se le llama soga a un rejo correa de cuero de res torcido que pase de 20 brazadas; distancia que hay entre las dos manos de un hombre cuando abre los brazos de largo.
Para su manejo se cagalerea en dos secciones: una para enlazar; y la otra para manejar la velocidad y peso de los toros, cuando se enlaza desde el caballo a gran velocidad con la punta atada a la cola arrebiatada.
Rope or lasso
Soga is the name of a piece of twisted cow’s leather, which is more than 20 armfuls the distance between the hands of a person when they open up their arms long.
To work with it, it is managed in two sections: one to rope and the other one to handle the roped animals when the soga is thrown from the horse at high speed. The back tip of the soga is tied to the tail of the horse so that it can better endure the speed and weight of the cattle.
Cabo de soga
Al igual que la soga, sirve para enlazar pero es más corta y no requiere ser cagaleriada porque se usa en toda su extensión.
Está fabricada de una correa de cuero de res torcida. Tiene menos de 20 brazadas de largo.
Piece of rope
Just like the lasso, it works to rope but it is shorter and it doesn’t need to be managed in two sections because it is used in all of its length.
It is made with a strip of twisted cow’s leather. It is less than 20 armfuls long.
Cabresto
Esta herramienta de trabajo se usa para amarrar los caballos por el cuello. En su forma más tradicional se hace con pelo de caballo, hilando y torciendo los órdenes hilados, algunas veces matizados (pelo negro y blanco).
Alrededor de este objeto hay innumerables relatos y agüeros que van desde evitar enfermedades a los caballos, el mal de ojo y la contra para los espantos.
Cabresto
This work tool is used to tie the horses by their necks. In its most traditional form, it is made with horse’s hair by spinning and braiding the spun strands, sometimes in different shades (white and black hair).
There are countless stories and omens around this object which go from avoiding sicknesses in the horses to avoiding the evil eye and as an amulet against ghosts.
Marota
Es un tipo de soga muy fuerte que se fabrica tejida y también torcida y trenzada con 4, 6 u 8 órdenes de acuerdo al peso que se quiere que resista.
Se usa para el manejo de animales grandes y pesados. Este tipo de sogas dan mucha seguridad a los trabajadores de llano porque difícilmente se revientan durante el trabajo y así se evitan accidentes.
Marota
It is a kind of very strong rope which is knitted, twisted or braided with 4, 6 or 8 strands, according to the weight it is meant to resist.
It is used to handle big and heavy animals. This kind of rope provides security to Llano workers because they hardly burst, so they prevent accidents.
Botalón
Es una horqueta elaborada de flor amarillo, caño fistol o de otras maderas fuertes y duraderas. Se entierra en la mitad del corral dejando aproximadamente 2 metros de altura sobre el piso.
Se usa para apegar caballos, amansar y dominar el ganado. Hay otros tipos llamados muñeco o matacho, que no tienen horqueta y se usan específicamente en la doma de caballos.
Botalón
A sort of pitchfork made of strong and long lasting woods. It is buried in the middle of the corral approximately up to 2 meters high. It is used to dominate horses, tame and break the livestock.
There are other kinds called Muñeco or Matacho, that don’t have a pitchfork form and are used specifically to tame horses.
Cachera
Es un collar para el ganado vacuno. Consta de una hembra (anillo de cacho) y un macho (la punta de un cacho) unidos por un rejo doble que da el diámetro del cuello de un toro.
Se usa para que un jinete pueda conducir un animal cimarrón de un lugar a otro. En el momento de soltarlo automáticamente el dispositivo le permite soltarlo evitando peligros y maltratos.
Cachera
It is a collar for cows. It is made up of a female end (a ring made of horn) and a male end (the tip of a horn) joined together with a double strip of leather which goes around the neck of a bull.
It is used to help the rider lead a wild animal from one place to the next. The device allows for automatic release of the animal, thus avoiding danger and mistreatment.
Enrejador
Es un pedazo de rejo de una brazada y media de largo. Sirve para amarrar o enrejar el becerro a la mano de la vaca, cerca del codillo (arriba de la rodilla).
Lo utiliza el ordeñador en el momento en que está ordeñando la vaca. Esto evita el estrés en la vaca porque tiene a su cría cerca durante el ordeño.

It is a piece of leather about one and a half armfuls long. It is used to tie down a calf to the hand of the cow, near the knee.
It is used by the milkman and it prevents stress in the cow because she has her baby nearby while being milked.
Camaza y burro
Son dos herramientas complementarias. La camaza es el fruto de un bejuco rastrero que se vacía de sus semillas y sirve de recipiente para recoger la leche, entre otro usos.
El burro es un soporte elaborado con cinco palos; cuatro de 50 cm y uno de 8 cm aproximadamente. Los grandes se cruzan en forma de X y el pequeño se coloca en la mitad del cruce para dar estabilidad al amarre central. Se usa para sostener la camaza debajo de la ubre durante el ordeño.
Camaza and burro
These are two complementary tools. The camaza is the fruit of a creeping plant which is emptied of its seeds and used to collect milk, among other uses.
The burro is a pillar made with 5 sticks; four of them are 50cms long and one is 8cms long, approximately. The long ones are crossed in an X form and the shorter one is placed in the middle of the junction to stabilize the main structure. It is used to hold the camaza under the udder during milking.

Herramienta usada en el corral durante el ordeño, para crear la sensación a la vaca de que está amarrada a un árbol o botalón.
Consta de un palo de 2 metros de largo con una gasa a una de las puntas que permita enlazar la cabeza del animal.

Tool used in the corral during the milking process to create the illusion that the cow is being tied to a tree or to a botalón.
It is 2 meter-long a stick with a string in one of the ends to tie the animal’s head.
Estribos
Los estribos más tradicionales son los estribos de pala. Pueden ser de cobre o de alpaca.
Son usados especialmente por domadores de caballos para jinetear y trabajar llano, porque permiten un agarre firme con los dedos de los pies. Deben usarse con los pies descalzos.
Stirrups
The most traditional stirrups are flat. They can be made of copper or nickel silver.
They are specially used by horse-breakers to ride and work with cattle because they allow a firm grip with the toes. These must be used barefoot.
Cincha
La cincha se teje en pelo de caballo con una argolla metálica en cada lado. En la antigüedad las argollar podían ser de hueso o cacho.
Sirve para mantener apretada la silla de montar al lomo del caballo o buey. En hecho de ser de pelo está asociado a creencias de los llaneros para evitar enfermedades en los caballos.
Cincha
The cincha is knitted in horse hair with a metal ring in each side. Formerly, the rings could be made of bone or horn.
It is used to keep the saddle tied up to the back of the horse or the ox. The fact that is made with hair is associated to the beliefs of Llano workers that it would avoid diseases in the horses.

Calzado tradicional de tipo artesanal hecho totalmente a base de cuero de res.
Loafers
Traditional artisanal footwear entirely made up of cow’s leather.
Pollero
Es un objeto de tela de 80 centímetros de largo, con un hueco en la mitad que permite meter o sacar cosas.
Se usa para transportar el bastimento (arepas, tajadas, carne frita, panela, queso, gofios, tungos y ruyas o roscas) en el anca del caballo durante las largas jornadas de arreo de ganado durante semanas de duración.
Pollero
Cloth object about 80cms long, with a hole in the middle that allows to put things in and out of it.
It is used to carry around the sustenance or bastimento (corn arepas, fried plantain, fried meat, panela -brown sugar loaf- , cheese, different kinds of bread –gofios, tungos- etc.) in the horse’s thigh during the long hours of herding, which would last for weeks.
Maletera
Objeto cilíndrico hecho de hilo o tela de aproximadamente 80 centímetros de largo. Sus dos extremos son huecos con cordones para apretar y cerrar.
Se usa para transportar la cama del vaquero (mosquitero o toldillo, chinchorro, sábana y guindos). Se lleva en el anca del caballo al lado del pollero.
Maletera
Cylindrical object made of yarn or cloth approximately 80cms long. Its two ends are hollow with strings to tighten and loosen it.
It is used to carry around the cowboy’s bed (mosquito net, hammock, covers and necessary strings). It is carried in the horse’s thigh next to the Pollero.

Bolsa hecha de cuero crudo que protege un frasco de creolina.
Va pegada a la silla del vaquero.Este medicamento sirve para curar los gusanos en los animales durante los trabajos de llano.
Creolin carrier
Bag made of raw leather which protects a jar of creolin.
It is attached to the saddle and is used to get rid of maggots in the animals’ skin during Llano work.
Zurrón de grapas
Recipiente elaborado de cuero crudo del escroto del toro.
Va pegado a la silla del vaquero y se utiliza para transportar las grapas, el martillo y cualquier otra herramienta utilizada en la reparación de las cercas.
Staple bag
Container made of raw leather from the bull’s scrotum.
It is attached to the saddle and it is used to carry staples, hammer and any other tool used to repair fences.
Segueta de estoconar
Se utiliza para estoconar - cortar las puntas del cacho de las reses puntonas - para evitar accidentes o corneadas durante los trabajos de llano.
Horn tipping saw
It is used to horn tip – to cut the ends of the horns of cattle – to avoid accidents or goring during llano work.
Cacho de beber
Objeto para recoger agua y beber directamente desde el caballo sin tener que bajarse durante el paso por caños, ríos o esteros en las jornadas de arreo.
Se elabora de un cacho de res y tiene una tira que sirve para lanzar al río y recuperarlo lleno.
Drinking horn
Used to gather and drink water directly from the horse, no need to get off it, while going through rivers, streams or estuaries during Llano work.
It is made up of a cow's horn and it has a string to throw to the water and retrieve it full.
Cacho de llamar o guarura
Este cuerno tiene múltiples usos: llamar los marranos, convocar a los trabajadores a la comida o al tinto, llamar al canoero en los pasos de los ríos, etc.
Está fabricado de un cacho completo con un orificio en la punta que sirve de embocadura para soplar y hacerlo sonar.
Calling horn
This horn has multiple uses: to call the swine, to summon the workers to eat or drink coffee, to call the canoe man to cross a river, etc.
It is made of a full horn with an orifice in the tip to blow on it to produce sound.
Bozal y tapaojo
Estos objetos forman parte del apero de cabeza del caballo. El bozal permite el dominio del caballo con el cabresto.
El tapaojo se usa con caballos que son delicados o muy briosos para evitar de barajusten, pateen o corcoveen. Los dos se fabrican de cuero crudo de res.
Muzzle and blinker
These objects are part of the horse’s headgear. The muzzle allows the dominion of the horse with the cabresto.
The blinker is used with horses that are quite delicate and spirited to avoid them running away, kicking or bucking. The two are made of raw cow’s leather.

Herramienta construida de madera. Se usa para torcer los cabrestos de pelo y las sogas y cabos de soga de cuero de res que se fabrican en todos los fundos y hatos de llano.

Mandador
Esta herramienta tiene uso tanto en la silla del vaquero como en el patio del fundo. Consta de un palo y una tira de rejo atada a un orificio en la punta.
Se hace sonar cuando se arrea o cuando se espantan gallinas, perros o marranos en el fundo. En casos extremos se usa para castigarlos.

This tool is both used in the saddle and the estate’s patio. It is made up of a piece of wood and a strip of leather tied to an orifice in the tip.
The worker strikes it when they want to herd cattle, scare hens, dogs or swine in the estate. In extreme cases, it is used to punish animals.
Llavero y trancas
Forma parte de los corrales ganaderos.
Constituye la puerta de seguridad. Los orificios - llavero - están tallados en horcones de maderas de corazón, y las trancas usualmente son de guadua o de maderas duras que soporten el peso de cientos de reses.

This is the security door of the cattle corrals.
The holes – llavero – are carved in wooden pillars and the trancas or locks (which secure the entire structure) are usually made of bamboo or hard wood to endure the weight of hundreds of cows.

Espacio construido usualmente cerca de la casa en los fundos y los hatos llaneros. Es donde se aperan y se desaperan los caballos.
En sus columnas siempre se cuelgas aperos. También allí están los garabatos sogueros de donde cuelgan todos los elementos de los trabajadores de llano.

Space usually built near the house in Llano estates. This is where horses get tacked and untacked.
There are always pieces of tack hanging from the columns. There are also the garabatos sogueros (branches from the Caruto tree), from which the worker’s gear is hung.
Fuete
Elemento de castigo para los animales. Se hace del pene de un toro, se seca al sol, se tiempla y se engrasa.
Se usa para castigar especialmente los caballos cuando son pícaros durante la doma.

Punishing tool for animals. It is made from a bull’s penis, which is sun dried, stretched and greased.
It is used to specially punish horses when they are mischievous during the breaking process.

Fruto del totumo.
Los hay de diversos tamaños y formas. Se abren con una segueta, se vacían, se secan y se usan como recipientes de múltiples usos en los fundos y hatos.

It is the fruit of the Calabash tree.
They have different shapes and sizes and are opened with a saw, emptied and used as containers in the Llano estates.
Tinaja o tinajero
La tinaja se elabora de un barro especial llamado losa, a este se le agregaba la ceniza de la concha del árbol de Cagui, se moldea y se cocinaban en horno de tierra.
Era la nevera del llanero antiguamente. El tinajero es la horqueta de tres puntas donde se acomoda la tinaja.
Jar or Jar holder
The jar is made of a special clay called losa, to which they add ash from the bark of the Cagui tree. It is then molded and cooked in an earth oven.
It was the refrigerator of the Llanero in the old days. The jar holder is a pitchfork-shaped branch where the jar is placed.

Se elabora una troja, encima de la troja se hace un cercado por todos los cuatro lados. Se rellena de tierra y se pisa para que quede apretada.
Luego se construyen dos paredes de adobe en forma rectangular para colocar sobre sus filos las ollas y debajo se atiza el fuego de leña.

A bamboo scaffold is made; above it, four walls are built. The space is filled with soil and stepped on it to tighten it.
Then, two adobe walls are built in a rectangular shape so that its edges support pots for cooking. Underneath it, the wood fire can be stirred.

Parihuela o pandorga es un elemento elaborado en cuero. A los lados largos se le metían dos palos de donde se levantaba.
En las puntas llevaba dos palos más cortos a la medida de la anchura. Su función principal era la de cargar tierra durante los diversos trabajos.

Two wooden sticks were introduced in the longer sides to lift it and the sorter sides had sticks to set its width.

Tipo de hamaca para dormir o descansar, hecha a partir de la piel de una res. Hay en diversos diseños que cada artesano define.
En su totalidad se hace de cuero y es una objeto de gran valoración estética.

It is entirely made in leather, which is why it is regarded as a highly aesthetic object.

Elemento fundamental en una cocina tradicional llanera. Se construye principalmente a partir de una rama de Caruto.
Allí se cuelga cualquier utensilio de cocina para tenerlo a la mano.

Tipo de mochila de gran tamaño para transportar grandes objetos.

Corotas
Forma parte de los frutos del totumo, pero cuando tienen formas alargadas se cortan dejándole una tapa para transportar o guardar diversos alimentos como huevos, dulces, o elementos de cocina como la sal, el café o el azúcar.

It is the fruit of the Calabash tree. When the fruits are elongated, they are cut only at the tip to allow for a small lid and are used to transport and store food like eggs, sweets, or cooking elements like salt, coffee or sugar.

Otro fruto del totumo en sus variadas formas.
En este caso se diseña con perforaciones para colar alimentos en las cocinas tradicionales. Se usa especialmente para los chicharrones de cerdo.

Una herramienta de cocina hecha para revolver los alimentos, sopas o dulces.
Se hacen a partir de madera o de guadua.

A cooking tool designed to stir foods like soups or sweets.
They are made of wood or bamboo.
Pilón y manija
Herramienta usada para pelar arroz o maíz, y para triturar alimentos en gran cantidad.
Se fabrica a partir del tronco de una gran árbol de madera dura y la manija se talla de tal forma que tenga el peso adecuado para la tarea.
Mortar and pestle
Tool used for peeling rice or corn and for grinding large amounts of food.
It is made from the trunk of a large, hard wood tree. The pestle is carved so that it has the right weight for the task at hand.
Jamuga y carapacho
La jamuga es un elemento elaborado en forma de rectángulo, hecho de vástago y hojas secas de plátano. Estas van aseguradas en puntas y centro con correa de cuero a una cubierta de cuero crudo que es el carapacho.
Se usa para proteger el lomo de mulas o burros durante la carga de objetos o materiales.
Jamuga y carapacho
The Jamuga is a rectangle-shaped element, made of the stem and dried leaves of the plantain tree. The carrapacho is a leather rectangle that is secured to the jamuga at the ends and middle with a strap of leather.
It is used to protect the back of mules or donkeys during the transportation of objects or materials.
Bastidor
Herramienta usada para cargar maderas o varas por medio del arrastre en un buey.
Se construye con dos varas de madera de 3,5 metros de largo. Se ubican las varas en la jamuga del buey, luego se colocan otras varas que mantienen la estructura en la parte de abajo, amarradas con correas de cuero a una distancia en que no hiera las patas del buey.
Bastidor
Tool used for carrying logs or sticks that are dragged by an ox.
It is built with two wooden rods about 3,5 meters long. These rods are then placed in the ox’s jamuga, sticks to maintain structure are placed at the bottom, and leather strips secure it all. The object’s width is determined by the width of the ox’s legs so as to not hurt the animal.
Angarilla
Objeto usado para llevar cargas en burros o mulas. Construido de madera con amarres en correas de cuero.
Usualmente va puesta sobre una jamuga que protege el lomo del animal y atada a la barriga con una cincha y una baticola a la parte trasera.

Object used to carry loads in donkeys or mules. It is built with wood and secured with leather straps.
It is usually placed on top of a jamuga that protects the animal’s back and tied to the belly with a belt called cincha. Another belt, a baticola is placed in the animal’s tail to secure it from the back.
Yugo
Ha caído en desuso. Se usaba para los bueyes en el arado de la tierra.
Se construía de madera fuertes y duras. Usualmente se usaba con dos bueyes.

No longer in use. It was used in the oxen’s head to plough the fields.
It used to be built with hard and strong wood.
Zaranda y trompo
Son juegos tradicionales de los llaneros. Se bailan zarandas y trompos especialmente durante la semana santa.
La zaranda se fabrica de camazo y el trompo de madera.

Two traditional Llanero games. People play with these especially during Holly Week.
The zaranda is made with camazo and the spinning top with wood.
Furruco
Instrumento musical construido a partir de un táparo o de un camazo con una membrana de cuero suave y templado, que se toca con una verada a través del rozamiento de los dedos.
Hace el papel del bajo en la música tradicional.

Musical instrument made from a taparo (Calabash) with a membrane of soft and stretched leather. It is played with a verada (a piece of waxed branch) through friction with the fingers.
It does the part of the bass in traditional music.

Dos instrumentos tradicionales de diapasón y cuerdas pulsadas que se usan especialmente para tocar joropo, que es la música tradicional llanera.
El cuatro suele cumplir una función armónica y la bandola una función melódica.

The cuatro tends to be harmonic and the bandola melodic.
Cirrampla o sirrampla
Originalmente es un arco de boca, es decir la cavidad bucal del intérprete es la caja de resonancia.
Esta de la imagen posee su propia caja de resonancia y es una transformación de la mencionada anteriormente. Se usa para tocar la música tradicional llanera.

Originally is a mouth bow, which means that the sounding box is the player’s mouth.
The one from the image has its own sounding box and is a transformation to the one previously mentioned. It is used to play traditional Llano music.
Maracas
Instrumentos musicales construidos a partir de táparos especiales y semillas de capacho. Algunas se fabrican también de coco.
Son de origen indígena y dentro del joropo cumplen la función de la percusión.

Musical instruments made from special calabash and Capacho seeds. Some are made with coconut.
They have an indigenous origin and are percussion instruments within Joropo music.
Aljibe o jagüey
Nacedero de agua construido para abastecer de agua manantial la casa del fundo o del hato.
Usualmente se abre en la tierra donde se sabe que hay nacederos de agua, y se mantiene con vegetación cercana para que no se seque en el verano.

Water spring built to supply the estate’s house with water.
